Description

Abstract:

The vegetation of Mt Ainslie and Mt Majura was mapped using numerically classified floristic data from 139 survey sites. Aerial photographs were used to interpret the data as vegetation units which were mapped at approximately 1:5000 scale on a contour base provided by the National Capital Development Commission

Lineage:

The Mt. Ainslie vegetation map was provided by WRM. The vegetation survey consisted of 1 hard copy map. The map was an original and was in very poor condition. The map consisted of two maps that were photocopied and then taped together to produce one large A0 size map of the Mt. Ainslie region. Due to the cost of scanning and the condition of the map, the map was transferred to a stable drafting film for the scanning process. Additional cleaning of a scan such as the removal of text, shades and boundary lines from the base map increases the cost of the procedure. The transfer sheet had only the polygon data and tic points for geo-referencing. The transfer sheet was then delivered to AGSO for scanning. The contact for the scanning procedure at AGSO was Brian Pashley. Once the scan was completed, Arc exchange files (.e00)were sent to GISTDA. There were no existing grid coordinates found on the map. Location points were identified on the existing hardcopy. Using DGPS x and y coordinates (in AMG)were obtained for these known locations on the map. These points were then used as the TIC points for the map. The Arc Exchange files (provided by AGSO) were then imported into Arc View and converted to a Shape file(.shp) format.. These files can be found in G:/GIS/Projects/Vegmap/Wholproj/Scanned/fupcott/mtainslie.shp. The shapefiles were then attributed with the existing legend information from the hard copy maps. Each polygon in the shape file was highlighted individually and attributed with the a map code. This was represented by a number or a string of letters (eg. P = E.pauciflora). The map code was used as the common Arc View field for joining the attributes of an Excel table. The Excel table is then saved as a .dbf (IV) and imported into Arc View. Once in Arc View the .dbf table is then joined to the shape file attribute tables. The existing shapefiles are then converted again to produce the final theme(s)with the appropriate attributes.
