Title: DUS Corporate Geographic Database - Reference Feature Name and Feature Name Extent
Custodian: ACT Government, Department of Urban Services, Customer Service and Information, Information Management Branch
Jurisdiction: Australian Capital Territory
Abstract:
This metadata record covers a group of three tables which form part of the Corporate Geographic Database (CGD) created under the DUS GIM Strategy. The CGD creates a fully homogeneous and integrated set of core geographic information which uses Oracle SDO. The CGD is a read only Oracle spatial database hosted within the ACT Government's production computing environment and is capable of being directly read by most GIS software. The CGD stores data in both the ACT Stromlo Projection and MGA94 projection for Zone55. The first table covered by this record is Feature_Name. This is the single source for all feature names in the CGD except map names, table names and StreetPro data names. The data source for this table is varied and in the logical model for the CGD the attributes Custodian_Structure and Custodian_Primary_Key track the source for each name. The attributes specific to this table are: Feature_Name_ID (a persistent identifier), Feature_Type_Code, Name, Road_Name_Short, Road_Name_Type_Long, Road_Name_Type_Short and Road_Name_Suffix. The second table is Feature_Name_Alias. This records all alternate names to the main name stored in the Feature Name table. The data source for this table is also varied. The attributes specific to this table are: Feature_Name_Alias_ID (a persistent identifier), Feature_Name_ID and Alias_Name. The third table is Feature_Name_Extent. This records the extent (in the form of a polygon) of a feature recorded in the Feature Name table where it is not otherwise recorded spatially in a single table in other parts of the database. These records are compiled by the GIM Unit. The attributes specific to this table are: Feature_Name_Extent_ID (a persistent identifier), Feature_Name_ID and Name. All three tables also include the attributes ANZLIC_ID, Source_ANZLIC_ID, Feature_Type_Code, Create_Date, Area and Feature_Instance_Metadata_ID.

Access constraints:
The Corporate Geographic Database has been compiled as a part of the ACT Geographic Information Management Strategy. Community access data sets in the database are available for internal use by agencies in the ACT Government, including presentation through ACT Government web sites. Use outside of this should be approved by the custodian of the source data (DUS IM Branch). This data set is classified as Community Access.
Lineage:
The source for data in the three tables covered by this record is very varied. A large proportion of the original records were obtained from ACTLIC and reside in the Spatial Data Management System (SDMS) through the tables FEATURE_NAME and GAZETTEER. In these cases the link to the appropriate spatial feature instance has been through the table FEATURE_NAMES_OVER_FEATURES. In other cases the association between the point coordinates in the FEATURE_NAME table has been compared with spatial featuers through a point in polygon overlay, or alternatively a bounding polygon has been created in the Feature_Name_Extent table to provide an approximate location and extent for the name. Other names have been provided by a range of data custodians. Further information can be obtained from the GIM Unit. Where a bounding polygon for a name is recorded in the Feature_Name_Extent table this is indicative only of the location and extent of the named feature. The source for these is usually screen digitising based on the appearance of related features in the CGD. For example a mountain name will be associated with a square which has been drawn to approximately encompass the apparent location and extent based on contour and inland water data.
Positional accuracy:
This only applied to the Feature_Name_Extent table. The depiction of the location and extent of a feature in this table is approximate only and should not be used for any purpose other than providing an indication of the location of a named feature.
Attribute accuracy:
This is difficult to assess given the wide range of data sources and methods for applying attributes. The GIM Unit will monitor the data set for attribute accuracy over time and revise this statement based on the statistics of this evaluation.
Logical Consistency:
All polygons in the Feature_Name_Extent table have been closed and do not include line artefacts such as dangles or overshoots.
Completeness:
Data in the three tables is being added to as information becomes available. This is particularly true of the Feature_Name_Extent table. NOTE: The attributes of Source_ANZLIC_ID, Feature_Type_Code and Feature_Instance_Metadata_ID have not been populated.
